country's most desirable places to live and earn a living. In fact, it has been included in Norman Crampton's "The 100 Best Small Towns in America." Whether your focus is on commerce, education, culture, recreation or just a great place to settle down, Stephenville offers it all. Our town is named for John M. Stephen, who
settled here in 1854 and donated the land for the town site laid out by George B. Erath in 1856. Thereafter, the town grew steadily as a center for agricultural and livestock production. Thereafter, the town grew steadily as a center for agricultural and livestock production. By the time 1886 rolled around, the area was also a center for coal mining, which remained an important industry for the next 30 years. Stephenville has a strong, diversified economic base. Agriculture is the leading industry, contributing approximately $200,000,000 to the economy. The manufacturing industry has increased steadily in importance over the past few years.
Local health care needs are served by Harris Methodist Erath County.
Plenty of shops feature authentic gear such as ten-gallon hats and spurs for your boots. We're home to the largest private country/Western club in the state, with live bands and two-steppin' available all night long.
Stephenville City Park and Stephenville Optimist/Jaycee Park
provide a recreation hall, pavilions, baseball/softball fields, batting cages, swimming pool, soccer fields, basketball courts, horseshoe courts,
walking/jogging track and playgrounds.
The Stephenville Museum has ten 19th century structures furnished with period furniture and artifacts. Head to Wright Historical Park to check out the Miller Grist Mill, a flour mill which was operational in the mid-1800s, plus the Turnbow-Barbee log cabin built by early settlers.
Stephenville is located in West Central Texas approximately 65 miles west of Fort Worth, 100 miles southwest of Dallas and 200 miles north of San Antonio.
